Training Tips
Preparing for the Connemarathon requires dedication. Whether you’re tackling the Connemara Half Marathon, the full Marathon Connemara or the Ultra Marathon Connemara, a structured training plan is essential.
Beginners should start with a 12-week programme incorporating long runs, easy/recovery runs, speed work, and rest days.
Intermediate and advanced runners would do well to focus on hill training and endurance runs to prepare for the undulating terrain.
When it comes to race week, begin tapering by reducing mileage. It’s essential to focus on hydration and eat a balanced diet rich in carbs and proteins.
While training, keep in mind that all markers on the Connemarathon will be in miles, not kilometres.

Race Day Preparation
Race day is finally here and it’s time to put all of your hard work and dedication to the test. Planning is everything so here are a few tips to make sure your head is in the game on the day.
What to wear
Connemara’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. Lightweight rain jackets, breathable fabrics, and moisture-wicking socks are recommended. 100% of the races are on road so normal running shoes are recommended. Trail shoes are not necessary.
Pre-race nutrition & hydration
A high-carb meal the night before, such as pasta or rice, helps build energy stores. On race morning, opt for a light breakfast like porridge and bananas.
Pacing & mental strategy
Due to the hilly nature of the course, pacing is crucial. Start steady and conserve energy for the later miles.
Spectator Information
Spectators are more than welcome at the Connemarathon and can cheer on runners at key locations. However, the best viewing point and where support is most needed is at the top of the ‘hell of the west’.
Spectator buses are available from Galway, Oughterard, and Clifden to Maam Cross (€20/adult, €15/child) and tickets must be booked in advance.
There will be a selection of food vendors and stalls at Peacock Hotel in Maam Cross selling tea, coffee and cold drinks. Be sure to bring extra layers as the weather in the area can change rapidly.
Remember, there is no parking at Maam Cross or start lines and road closures will be in effect during the race.
