KYLEMORE ABBEY

The Fascinating History of Kylemore Castle

The story of Kylemore Castle began in 1867 when Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor and businessman from Manchester, decided to build a grand estate for his wife, Margaret.  Originally, it was meant as a romantic holiday retreat, but over time it became a cherished family home. The castle’s fairy-tale location and intricate design made it one of the most impressive buildings in the whole of Ireland.

Tragically, during a holiday to Egypt in 1874, Margaret suddenly fell ill with dysentery and passed away at the age of just 45. Deeply heartbroken, Mitchell returned to Kylemore and built a beautiful Neo-Gothic church in her memory, known today as the Gothic Church. Often referred to as a “cathedral in miniature,” this church became a lasting tribute to Margaret and one of Kylemore Abbey’s most cherished spots.

Kylemore Castle went through various transitions, eventually becoming Kylemore Abbey when it was taken over by Benedictine nuns in the 1920s. Since then, it’s served as a place of reflection, education, and preservation, as the nuns have worked tirelessly to maintain its charm and historical value.

Today, Kylemore Abbey is a symbol of resilience, where Ireland’s history is preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

What to See at Kylemore Abbey

A visit to Kylemore Abbey reveals a series of marvellous sights that bring Irish history and architecture to life. As you explore the Abbey, you’ll see beautifully restored rooms that offer a glimpse into life in a 19th-century Irish estate. Inside, displays showcase the building’s transformation from castle to abbey and detail the lives of the Benedictine nuns who made it their sanctuary.

The Gothic-style church on the grounds is another highlight, featuring impressive woodwork and stained glass. The Mausoleum is a peaceful, hidden resting place for Mitchell and Margaret Henry. Margaret was buried there in 1874 after her passing and Mitchell joined her in 1910, creating a lasting tribute to their love amidst the Connemara woodlands.
