The main 68km Gaelforce West route remains the centrepiece of the event’s 20-year celebrations. Starting in the Lough Inagh Valley, competitors face 18.5km of running, a kayak crossing on Killary Fjord, and 48.5km of cycling before finishing in Westport.

The opening 13.5km run combines trail and road sections beneath the Maamturks and Twelve Bens before reaching Killary Adventure Centre. Competitors then complete a 1km kayak loop across Killary Fjord in two-person sit-on-top kayaks before continuing into a long cycling stage through Leenane, the Partry Valley, and the Sheefry Pass area.

One of the toughest parts of the course comes at Croagh Patrick, where racers leave the bike behind for a steep 4.5km mountain climb and descent over rough terrain before the final 12km cycle into Westport.

Gaelforce West 34km

Alongside the main race, 2026 also introduces the special one-off Gaelforce Westport 34km route. Designed as an anniversary sprint event, it starts at Westport Quay and combines running and cycling stages through the Great Western Greenway, Brackloon Woods, and the roads surrounding Croagh Patrick.

The shorter route still includes a demanding mountain section, with competitors tackling a steep 3km climb towards the Croagh Patrick ridge before the final cycle back into Westport.

Both events reward pacing far more than outright speed. The terrain constantly changes, transitions break rhythm, and Atlantic weather can quickly turn manageable sections into serious endurance tests.

A steady rhythm almost always works better than an aggressive start followed by exhaustion.

Essential Gear for Gaelforce West Race Day

Competitors should always check the latest official equipment requirements before travelling, as Gaelforce West is an adventure race and mandatory kit rules are taken seriously. Anyone arriving without the required gear may not be allowed to start.
